If you’re on a diet, or just trying to make healthier choices, going to the grocery store can be quite intimidating. However, luckily if you follow a few simple rules, you can make it out alive and guilt free.

Do’s and Don’ts of Grocery Shopping:

DO: STICK TO THE OUTSIDE ISLES
Although the names may be different, most grocery stores are fairly similar, especially when in comes to their layout. Grocery stores tend to keep their most healthy and nutritious foods around the perimeter. When you first arrive at a new grocery store, take a lap around the store. You’ll most likely spot your produce, dairy, and meat needs. Now the inside isles are where things get a little dangerous. Here you’ll find foods that are packed in fat and lacking nutrients. However, there is one exception. Hit up the frozen food aisle! You’ll be able to pack up on frozen fruits and veggies .

DON’T: GO HUNGRY
Shopping hungry is probably one of the worst mistakes you can make. Chances are your body will begin to crave something high in sugar and fat to fill its void. Shopping after breakfast or a morning snack is prime for making the healthiest choices.

DO: STICK TO THE SAME STORE
Once you find a store that carries all of the right foods for your diet, keep shopping there. It will be easier for you to get in and out with only the necessities. You’ll also be more likely to avoid the aisles with bad foods.

DON’T: GO IN WITHOUT A PLAN
Going in with a clear, thought-out list is clutch if you want to stick to your diet. Without a plan, it is easy to get distracted and grab unhealthy snacks and items that are high in fat and sugar.

DO: SHOP EARLY
If possible, try to get to the grocery store in the morning rather than in the afternoon or evening. You’ll have first pick of the freshest foods available since most stores put their produce and fresh meats out in the morning. Avoiding the afternoon crowds is also a huge plus!
